Summary
Scribbi gave me the opportunity to work on a product built around a genuine concern many parents share today: how children experience technology. As a designer and a parent, this project reinforced the value of creating digital experiences that encourage curiosity, support learning, and respect a child's attention. It also reminded me that thoughtful UX begins with understanding people before designing for them.
Scribbi: A Device That Earns Its Place in Our Homes
For those who haven’t come across it yet: Scribbi is an E-Ink learning device designed for children aged 3–10. It’s built around a simple idea: the habits children develop between ages 3 and 10 are often the ones that stay with them. No blue light, no overstimulating patterns, no YouTube rabbit holes. Parent-led learning goals that AI transforms into activities with engaging stories and characters, creating a more intentional approach to screen time for kids.
Built from a Real Problem
Scribbi was created by Katarina and Keller Seamons, two parents who decided to do something about the growing influence of the digital world over childhood.
What struck me about Scribbi is that it didn’t begin in a boardroom looking for a market opportunity. It started with a genuine problem and a genuine conviction. And they’re not alone. More and more parents are questioning the default relationship children have with technology and looking for alternatives that feel more intentional and less overwhelming, and supportive of long-term digital wellbeing of kids.
Scribbi is built for them.
Why This Project Felt Personal
The project resonated with me not just as a designer interpreting a brief, but as a parent who has wrestled with the very problem Scribbi is trying to solve.
I’ve had those moments when you hand your child a screen because you need five uninterrupted minutes, and almost immediately start wondering where they might end up. No matter how many child profiles, restrictions, or parental controls exist, there’s always that lingering concern about the habits they’re building and the content they’re being exposed to, and the kind of screen time they’re experiencing.
Scribbi felt different. The idea of giving my child a device designed for intentional use felt genuinely exciting, a small step towards healthier digital wellness and a better relationship with technology.
Where Aufait UX Came In
A product like this doesn’t happen without many people caring deeply about getting it right. We were one part of that effort, working alongside the Scribbi product team and talented collaborators who helped shape the experience: educators, childhood development specialists, storytellers, and others who brought different perspectives to the table.
At Aufait UX, we worked on the UI and UX, helping translate the vision into an experience that children could navigate confidently while keeping parents involved in the learning journey.
Some of the most interesting challenges came not from the vision itself, but from the constraints that made Scribbi what it is: an E Ink device, designed for young children, deliberately stripped of the things that make most screens hard to put down.

Designing Against the Default
The design challenge itself was fascinating because it pushed against many assumptions that have become standard in digital product design.
Children are naturally curious. The challenge wasn’t finding ways to hold their attention. It was creating an experience that felt simple, intuitive, and inviting enough for that curiosity to take over.
- How do you design navigation for children who may not yet be confident readers?
- How do you create meaningful exploration on an E Ink device with a very different set of constraints from tablets and smartphones?
- How do you support discovery and learning while ensuring parents remain part of the experience and encouraging healthier screen time habits?
They didn’t have easy answers, and that’s what made the work interesting.
At Aufait UX, we’re proud of the work that went into bringing Scribbi to life. Watching it move toward its Kickstarter launch is exciting. The line between ethical engagement and behavioral addiction comes down to how you handle loops and endings. Avoid toxic mechanics like infinite scrolling feeds, unpredictable variable reward drops, and punitive daily streaks that trigger anxiety. Instead, build your interface around explicit natural stopping points such as chapter completions, hard session boundaries, and structured daily learning milestones.
While adult UX design focuses on removing all possible friction to create seamless, brainless transactions, children’s UX requires injecting responsible friction. This means introducing deliberate micro-pauses before critical actions. For example, forcing a 3-second hold to confirm exiting a learning game, or displaying an intentional confirmation modal before spending earned points. This intentional friction forces cognitive reflection, forcing the child to transition from impulsive tapping to mindful decision-making.
You must design two distinct, completely isolated interfaces within the same digital ecosystem. The parent-facing dashboard needs to prioritize clean data density, clear milestone metrics, actionable configuration controls, and seamless billing management. The child-facing interface must remain a completely distraction-free, immersive playground. Crucially, the gateway between the two must use advanced, non-trivial parental locks like multi-step word math problems rather than simple number entries to prevent accidental cross-over.
The secret is building clear, natural stopping points into the design, like finishing a book chapter, rather than using endless scrolling feeds. This helps children feel satisfied with what they accomplished and makes it much easier for them to put the device down without a tantrum.
Children have developing fine motor control and use different hand postures, often clutching a device with their palms while stabbing with their thumbs. To accommodate this, touch target targets must be significantly upsized compared to standard adult mobile guidelines:
•Minimum Target Size: At least 72×72 pixels (compared to the adult standard of 44×44 or 48×48).
•Spacing Buffer: Keep active buttons isolated by at least 16–24 pixels of dead negative space to eliminate the frustration of accidental mistaps.
•Edge Safety: Avoid placing critical navigation elements right along the extreme outer edge of the display, where holding fingers cause accidental triggers.
