Designing a proof of concept dashboard, both with and without Power BI, for a leading automotive company was a rewarding journey. It required in-depth research, focused decision-making, and the excitement of seeing our work come to life in a way that we believe will benefit our client.

In the automotive industry, every decision impacts efficiency, performance, and customer satisfaction, so having a clear view of the numbers is essential. That’s especially true for our client, one of India’s largest and most respected manufacturers of both passenger and commercial vehicles. For them, having a dashboard that delivers real-time insights and simplifies complex data is essential to drive smart, timely decisions

A Need for Smarter Dashboard Solutions – Challenge and Objective

But when the client approached us, their existing dashboards weren’t meeting the mark. C-level executives needed a way to track sales, dealer performance, and customer sentiment, yet their current setup lacked the flexibility, interactivity, and responsiveness required for proactive decision-making. They needed dashboards that could tell a story, reveal patterns, and support timely, informed decisions across the company.

At Aufait UX, we saw this as an exciting opportunity to design a suite of dashboards that would empower their teams to turn raw data into actionable insights.

What Was Our Solution?

Our solution involved creating two versions of each dashboard — one utilizing the interactive capabilities of Power BI and another as a custom, responsive design without Power BI. The Power BI version leveraged in-built components, which brought some limitations on customization but offered rich interactivity and real-time analytics. Meanwhile, the non-power BI version allowed us greater flexibility in incorporating design elements freely and adapting visuals to our client’s needs across devices. By offering both options, we ensured that their team would have the right dashboards to fit their varied needs.

In this case study, we’ll walk you through the design process for three critical dashboards: the Business Performance Dashboard, the Sales Dashboard, and the Dealer Dashboard. Each one was carefully designed to give our client’s executives a clear, user-friendly view of the metrics that matter most. Take a closer look at our dashboard design services, which combine insightful design with data-driven technology to create a dashboard experience that supports decision-making at every level.

Moving Ahead: Brainstorming, Shaping Ideas, and Working Tirelessly Toward the Best Possible Dashboard Design

1. Business Performance Dashboard Design: Simplifying Complex Metrics for Clear Insights

The Business Performance Dashboard was designed to give our client’s leadership an at-a-glance view of key business metrics, from purchase trends to model-specific sales data. Executives needed to see the big picture without getting bogged down by details — so we focused on clarity, simplicity, and intuitive navigation.

Design Choices: Bringing Clarity to Complex Data

Clarity was everything for this dashboard. Our goal was to organize data in a way that allowed executives to grasp critical metrics instantly. By creating a clear visual hierarchy, we ensured that essential metrics like revenue and model-specific sales stood out, while secondary data stayed accessible but unobtrusive.

Power BI vs. Custom Dashboard Design

  • With Power BI: Using Power BI gave this dashboard an interactive edge, though customization was limited to its in-built components. We conducted thorough research to select Power BI components that best fit our client’s data needs. The Purchase Trend Graph was particularly powerful, enabling users to filter by vehicle model and analyze real-time sales and revenue by category. Executives could dive deeper into trends for SUVs, hatchbacks, or e-SUVs, seeing patterns as they emerge.
  • Without Power BI: In the non-Power BI version, we crafted a clean, static graph that updates periodically. Free from Power BI’s component limitations, we had greater flexibility to customize the layout and visuals, optimizing this design for consistency across devices and ensuring that data remains accessible, even in environments where real-time updates aren’t feasible.

2. Sales Dashboard: Visualizing Sales, Market Share, and Earnings Across Regions

The Sales Dashboard needed to offer a comprehensive view of our client’s revenue history, sales distribution, and regional performance.  For this automotive leader, understanding sales trends by region is crucial for identifying growth opportunities and optimizing resource allocation.

Design Approach: Layered Navigation and Detailed Insights

In crafting the Sales Dashboard, we wanted to create a layered experience where executives could begin with an overview and then drill down into regional details as needed. This setup lets users shift smoothly between seeing the overall picture and zooming in on specific regional metrics, all within a clean, easy-to-navigate interface.

Power BI vs. Custom Dashboard Design

  • With Power BI: Power BI’s interactive features enabled us to design a dynamic, color-coded map for the Sales Trend, allowing users to filter by region and instantly view local sales data. Executives can quickly spot fluctuations and identify high-growth areas, simplifying market strategy decisions. Additionally, market share data is represented through a histogram chart, offering a clear and detailed view of distribution across regions.
  • Without Power BI: In the non-Power BI version, we created a color-coded static map that visually breaks down regional sales. For market share, we used a circle-based Venn diagram model, providing a unique, clear representation without interactivity. While this version doesn’t include Power BI’s interactive features, it maintains visual clarity and is compatible across a wide range of devices, making it a reliable choice for teams in diverse locations.

3. Dealer Dashboard: Monitoring Dealer Performance and Customer Sentiment

The Dealer Dashboard was a vital tool for our client’s team, providing insights into dealer performance, top-selling products, and customer sentiment. This dashboard helps our client keep a pulse on their dealer network, identifying top performers and understanding overall customer satisfaction.

Design Strategy: Prioritizing Key Metrics for Fast Insights

For the Dealer Dashboard, we designed a clear hierarchy that put key metrics — such as top dealers and top products — at the forefront. Supporting data, like the sales funnel and customer sentiment analysis, was included as additional context. This structure lets executives see crucial data at a glance while offering deeper insights for those looking to explore further.

  • With Power BI: Power BI brought a new level of interactivity to this dashboard. Executives can filter by dealer or product category, viewing Top Dealers and Customer Sentiment metrics in real-time. The sales funnel also becomes a multi-layered, color-coded interactive experience, offering a clear view of conversion rates at each stage.
  • Without Power BI: In the non-Power BI version, we retained the same essential data but presented it in a simplified, static format. This version is highly reliable and works seamlessly across devices, making it a practical solution for teams on the go or in areas with limited connectivity.

Aufait UX’s Expertise in Dashboard Design for High-Impact Insights

For this automotive leader data is more than numbers; it’s the pulse of every decision they make. They came to us because their C-level executives needed dashboards that didn’t just display information, they needed tools that made data instantly meaningful, helping them make smart moves without the usual friction.

We set out to design dashboards that offered exactly that. One version leverages Power BI, with interactive features that let their team closely monitor real-time insights. The other is a streamlined design, ideal for cross-device use, delivering the same critical data without relying on Power BI. Both versions share one goal: helping our client’s executives see what they need, when they need it.

At Aufait UX, our focus is simple,  to build dashboards that feel intuitive, look great, and get right to the point. For us, it’s all about transforming raw data into something clear, actionable, and accessible.
